There were a couple of issues with the Winding Constrictor plan

Its less efficient than Gaeas Cradle because it costs mana to activate the second ability and youre locked into a single creature type, but it can produce mana of any color and even makes colorless on an empty board

This can be reduced to 5 with Shift

Also, the land comes in untapped if you have one land or less in play which makes it decent in the early game

While you watch your opponents struggle to cast anything and question the purpose of their lives, you have to win, too and combat is probably a good way to further reinforce the point you are going to drag the game out
